The viewfinder is bright and clean, and the rangefinder patch is contrasty. All levers, dials, switches, and knobs actuate with mechanical precision. The self-timer function works correctly, shutter speeds are accurate, and the lens aperture works properly.

The film compartment is clean. The lens is excellent. The glass elements are clean and free of fungus, haze, scratches, and balsam separation. The shutter and aperture blades are clean and free of damage and oil.

The Ricoh 500 is one of the finest all mechanical rangefinder cameras to come from Japan in the 1950s and it’s still very much a useful camera today. The 45mm F/2.8 Riken Ricoh lens is sharp and makes gorgeous photos, and is fast enough shot wide open to be used in low light conditions with the right film.
